Just from the word go, Redlions started with a front foot
and they nearly open the scoring in as early as five minutes when civo’s defense
failed to deal with James Chisutu’s long
throw, but Kelvin Katema somehow failed to direct the ball behind the net.
Few minutes later, civo wasted two golden goal scoring
opportunities in quick succession, first with Martin Masoatheka passed Redlions
defense with ease and had only the keeper to beat, but instead of putting a
simple finish he opted for curler, his effort went wide. Then he was followed
by welani Nyirenda who cut in from the right flank and unleashed a thunderous
shot which was easily smothered by Brighton Ngwenyama (Redlions goalie).
Civo would soon pay for their misses as Redlions grabbed the
lead in the 23rd minute when Boniface Kaulesi’s teasing cross beat
civo’s defenders, Kelvin Katema was at hand to pounce.1-0.
Civo felt had done by when they saw their penalty appeals
turned down, when Martin Masoatheka was brought down in the penalty box by
Ngwenyama.
In the second half, Redlions continued from where they had
left from before the interval, and their hard pressing would soon be reward
when Dan Katunga latched onto Ngwenyama’s long ball, his first attempt was
saved by Onani Sengwa (civo goalie) but he followed it up with a simple tap in,
2-0.
Sir alex Masanjala reacted to the goals by making a double substitution,
bringing on Lawrence Mwehiwa and Lusekero Mwathengere to replace of Jabulani Linje
and Lazarus Chirwa.
Civo tried to work their way into the game but Redlions
hanged on to their advantage.2-0 it ended in favour of Redlions. After the game
Redlions coach Collins Nkuna was convinced by the effort produced by his
charges.
“I am happy for the results and the way we have played today.
It was a tough game but we scored an early goal which gave us courage. It’s
good that we have managed to maintain our unbeaten run, but now we cannot
concentrate on that because we have some more games to play.” he said
His opposite number sir Alex Masanjala accepted the defeat
and bemoaned his team’s failure to take their chances.
“We played well but we have lost the game, we prepared
well but may be they prepared better
than us, and we created a lot of chances but may be were not sharp in front of goal”
